The Essentials - Worldwide Scottish Favourites

Denis Snowdon is a long-term friend of traditional music. 44 years long in fact, ‘cause that’s how long Denis has been on air with his “Little Breath of Scotland” radio show in Ontario, Canada.

He’s been in touch, taking up our challenge from last month’s newsletter to ‘give us your lists’.

Like any D.J. he tends to go over the top so he gave us a ‘top twenty five’ and equally like any D.J., he then starts to say that ‘it’s a moveable feast and maybe next week I would opt for another selection’. Make up your mind Denis! Then again, that’s music and the mood it creates or satisfies.

Here’s Denis Snowdon’s Top Ten of "A Little Breath of Scotland"

1) Highland Cathedral – Royal Highland Fusiliers Pipes & Drums (Original Version).
2) My Love Is Like A Red, Red Rose – Kenneth McKellar.
3) Roamin’ In the Gloamin’ – Sir Harry Lauder.
4) Jacqueline Waltz – Will Starr.
5) Massacre Of Glencoe – Alastair McDonald.
6) 6.20 Two Step – Jimmy Shand.
7) Bonnie Mary of Argyle – Roberet Wilson.
8) Hector the Hero – Wolfstone.
9) My Ain Folk – Moira Anderson.
10) I Love A Lassie – Clyde Valley Stompers

And, just to prove we are not making this whole thing up to impress you – you can hear “A Little Breath of Scotland” with Denis Snowdon on Sundays on AM740 from 4.00 – 6.00 CST and you can get the show (also on Sundays) on the internet between 9.00 – 11.00pm in the UK at www.am740.ca

Thank you for your interest Denis. Keep up the good work!

More £5 Specials - Popular and Easy Listening.

Following on from the success of the £5 pipe band CD over the piping season we have again twisted the arm of our friends at Lismor Records in order that you can get some great auld Scots sangs in, in time for the holiday season.

So check out the site and look for the "Offer" sign and save yourself at least a couple of ££ per CD.

Us, generous! The bank manager's having pups.

What's Hot in Piping

Red Hot Chilli Pipers – just added to our site with their first CD for download, too – have their new CD and DVD out on 20th October. You can ‘Pre-Order’ for immediate delivery from day of release.

And for the fans of The World Pipe Band Championships – the 2 DVDs are out this month. All the bands from Grade One, split over the two separate discs. The downloads of the music from the Championships have been our best selling downloads so far.

Notes from the Sharp End

And if the Red Hot Chilli Pipers are too traditional for you?!?....

Over the last year we've been working with some other music businesses to promote young bands across all genres by recording their gigs and making them available for download. From walls of noise to some ska and 7 piece vocal harmonies we've covered all corners of "Scottish Music". The next event is a celebration of acoustic music and we'll have free tickets to give away in the next mailout. For now check out some of the varied music.

Just Released & Coming Soon

Just being ADDED from Ireland is the reissue of the first two ever albums from Clannad – both on one CD featuring 31 tracks; two CDs from The Fuchsia Band; Sliotar (who are coming on board with 4 albums for download); Matt & Orlaith Keane; singer Helen Hayes and flautist Brian O’Connor. Sean Keane & The Clancy Brothers both have DVDs coming too.

From Scotland, Fergie MacDonald 'Live at the BBC' should keep things lively enough, Deoch 'n' Dorus have another 'belter' and Malinky (Flower & Iron) with their 4th release and they get better all of the time.
