At various grades there are now too many bands, thanks to the international growth in pipe banding, so some grades are split into two sections.
However in the highest grade, Grade One, only the top five bands in any year go forward automatically into the following years final Championship.
This means that on the morning of the Championships the remaining Grade One bands are involved in a Qualifying Heat - from which the top six go through to join the 'elite'. These may also be joined by bands chosen on other merits.
